The founders of the Tactical Urbanism movement, Mike Lydon and Anthony Garcia, propose: "Tactical Urbanism is a method of neighborhood development and activation using short-term, low-cost, and scalable interventions and policies... It leverages an open and iterative development process, effectively utilizes resources, and unlocks the creative potential of social interactions."

Forms like community gardens, pocket parks, micro-parks, and temporary public structures are frequently employed to reinvigorate underutilized urban spaces. These participatory designs bring residual or abandoned public spaces back into the public eye, rejuvenating community dynamics. Even simple acts like mural painting or bench repairs can have a profound impact on resident interactions, sense of belonging, and overall quality of life.

From the realm of Tactical Urbanism, the question arises: What can we improve? How can we imbue new functionalities into things, transforming them into "new products"? Thus, Dayuan initiated the "Crystal Mind" urban welfare project, aiming to alleviate urban residents' psychological stress through a series of artistically crafted urban furniture made from sustainable materials.

The earliest creation, the "Rain Stick," combines amusement with sound therapy, fostering shared joy among people (Click to view related content). As we delve into the world of design, we aim to disseminate a plethora of healing insights and moments to the public and society at large. This time around, we're brewing up fresh ideas once again.

Building upon the foundational module of the "Rain Stick," Dayuan has innovated a new urban plugin called "Crevice," offering people a place to rely on, sit, and rest. Its design inspiration originally stemmed from a group we observed, known as "Urban Night Commuters," who often traverse the city's nocturnal landscape after finishing work or activities.

During these night walks, people transition from busyness to tranquility, and the nuances and fluctuations of emotions are sometimes drowned in dim and narrow alleys. Thus, we hope that through this urban furniture, these gray spaces can be illuminated, alleviating passersby's feelings of unease and anxiety, enabling a more relaxed walking and resting experience.

In addition to fulfilling basic lighting functions, the installation features a sensor-activated light interaction system. As people pass by, it generates flowing light and shadow changes based on different walking rhythms. Serving as a "companion" in the night, "Crevice" accompanies people through the entire passage space. Whether through lighting design, seating facilities, or landscape elements, this urban furniture brings unique and practical functionalities, imbuing significance into every crevice.

In terms of material application, we continue to use the recycled polycarbonate (PC) material jointly developed with Wanhua Chemical in the past. This material is typically made from recycled polyester plastics, boasting higher heat resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, and mechanical strength compared to traditional PC materials.

Based on Dayuan’s past design practices, the strength of this material offers unique advantages as seating or other functional flat materials, while its translucency makes it an ideal choice for meeting lighting needs. From an environmentally friendly perspective, incorporating over 30% recycled materials into products can reduce carbon emissions by over 15% compared to non-recycled PC materials. This not only strengthens the practicality of recycled PC materials as urban furniture materials but also broadens their application prospects.

Transforming the light generated from urban waste recycling illuminates the pathways, aiding urban night commuters in better navigating their nighttime journey. "Crevice" is not just a spatial intervention but also a redefinition of urban spaces and a catalyst for community development. By creating urban furniture that is both artistic and functional, public spaces in the city are transformed into shared community areas, providing residents with a space for gathering, communicating, and relaxing.

We aspire to contribute to an inclusive and interactive urban environment, mitigating residents' psychological stress and loneliness by enhancing community cohesion and a sense of belonging, enabling everyone to find inner balance and peace.
